Numenera - Astraphin Monolith's Cover

Numenera - Astraphin Monolith

USD 2.00

An astraphin monolith is a floating, immobile obelisk of stone standing a bit taller than a human, with a single crystalline eye. The eye can create dangerous blasts at long range, leading some to believe it is a hostile earth elemental creature. However, the stone is neither living nor sentient, but rather the extension of a concealed intelligence.

Numenera - Dorgur Auk

In the middle of a blinding storm that swept across the lands of Seshar, the lattimor warrior Dorgur-Auk found himslef stranded in a small cave with a clan of human exiles also sheltering from the storm. They share what little food and water they had with him. That night, Dorgur-Auk bonded with these people and swore to be their protector. Read more about the clan Auk in the Ninth World Bestiary!

Numenera - Olion's Cover

Numenera - Olion

USD 2.00

These humanoids have almost-normal humanoid heads. Their bodies, however, are a jumble of two to four other bodies—sometimes humanoid, sometimes no —fused together to create an awkward patchwork of legs, arms, limbs from weird creatures, and even a few half-fused but inactive heads.

Numenera - Kaseyer's Cover

Numenera - Kaseyer

USD 2.00

Kaseyera are unstable semi-humanoid predators with a hereditary psychosis so extreme, it grants the creatures dread mental abilities—or perhaps the mental abilities are what produce the psychosis.
Their bodies are bipedal but warped, with odd spines growing from their flesh, green sores dotting their skin, and a thin, birdlike beak.

Numenera - Argozt's Cover

Numenera - Argozt

USD 4.00

These intelligent predators have near-human intellect and the ability to teleport. An argozt’s body has a feline outline, with powerful forelegs, feathers as its mane and on its rear legs, and a jaw that combines a beak and flaring jawbones. Its most noticeable feature, however, is the sphere of energy above its back, surrounded by orbiting arcs of shining metal that pass harmlessly through the creature’s body (the argozt calls its “light”).

Larus live comfortably in deserts, near lakes, and even beneath water in small, air-filled cavities.

Numenera - Creel's Cover

Numenera - Creel

USD 2.00

These furry, winged caterpillar-like people are explorers, traders, and seekers. They tame the Liminal Shore to their own needs, but sometimes rivalries among other species, and even among their own kind, erupt into conflict that can send an entire domain into a flash war with a neighbor. Thankfully most such conflicts end within a few days, so the Liminal Shore does not react by dispatching an immune response. Unlike wholkin and humans, creel have no gender. They reproduce asexually. Though they lay eggs, interaction with the kai itself is what causes variation in their bloodlines, so that creel vary from generation to generation. Individually, creel are as varied in attitude and motivation as individual humans are.

This undulating mass of metallic tendrils resembles nothing so much as a sea flower sculpted from woven steel. Parting the wriggling metal ropes reveals the nucleus: a knotted metallic brain whose every fissure pulses with faint green light. When placed in close proximity to any intact corpse, the object's tendrils will burrow deep into the recesses of the dead being's body. Within moments the Encephalon will be completely subsumed into the host, who will arise a mindless thrall awaiting purpose.

A creature floats before you, hidden inside the bulk of its armor-cloth robes, unmoving and unmoved by your presence. Exactly who, or what, the thing is - man or machine, mutant or monster - is impossible to discern. Its glass face reveals nothing but your reflection; its mechanical voice reveals nothing at all. You recall that this creature is known as a philethis, but you don't know anything else about them.

All naluruses are humanoid in appearance, albeit stricken with a deadly kind of hereditary disease. This ancient illness causes them to look stopped and fragile, painting their heads with spirals, geometric shapes, and all other manner of disquieting linework. Unfortunately, the disease that almost killed them is transferrable via sight, begins to experience a rapid and very painful chain reaction, soon after liquifying the victim's brain so that it runs out of their ears, nose, eyes, and mouth as some disgustingly pink fluid.

A lorub is a 12-foot (3.7 m) long water-dwelling beast that lives near coastal areas, hunting for fish, mammals, and the occasional drowned fisher. A lorub breathes air but can hold its breath for several hours. It can be caught and tamed for use as a mount, though even trained lorubs dunk their riders from time to time.

Tall and thin-legged, a snow loper is a fast-moving omnivore. It has a very short neck and a large head with a wide, toothy mouth. Long hair covers its roundish, muscular body. Below its mouth are two thin arms with two-fingered hands that it uses mainly for grasping food or navigating treacherous climbs. Since it lacks thumbs, it doesn’t really use tools. Most people speculate that the snow loper is a genetically engineered creature intended to be used as a mount in steep, rocky environments. In the Ninth World, however, many snow lopers roam wild.

The rurtalian—at least the one that most people see—is a squat, 4-foot (1.2 m) tall creature with two limbs and a massive, pulsating sensory apparatus surrounded by a wreath of smaller sensory organs and seemingly little else. These things are a strange combination of eyes, ears, and olfactory apparati. They can project destructive rays that render matter into paste. If it is organic paste, the rurtalian can then feed on it through its skin. It does not otherwise need to breathe, drink, or sleep.

Nanos are sometimes called mages, wizards, sorcerers, or witches by the people of the Ninth World. Nano-sorcerer is also a common term, with their abilities referred to as nano-sorcery. Some claim to be the representatives of gods or other supernatural agencies. Whatever they’re called, Nanos master the mysteries of the past to the degree that they seem to perform miracles. They tap into the numenera to alter reality or learn things that they couldn’t otherwise know.

Most kanthids are multilimbed creatures shaped vaguely like other animals found in the Ninth World. Whatever its underlying shape, the rough skin of a kanthid is a stony mineral whorled and studded with short spines. Here and there, openings in the stone reveal mouths ringed in writhing cilia. Kanthids with biped, humanoid shapes sometimes speak, though they don’t make much sense.

The largest thing to darken the Ninth World sky is the xi-drake, a massive, white-skinned reptile with broad wings, a long tail, and a large armored crest on its head. Xi-drakes have keen senses, but more impressively, they can read the mind of any intelligent living creature at long range and thus are almost impossible to deceive. They breed rarely but are extremely long-lived.

Titanothaurs have characteristics that remind observers of recognizable Ninth World animals and insects. This similarity has led to the obvious conclusion that titanothaurs are the product of natural creatures that have been enlarged somehow by numenera. A fine conclusion, perhaps, but no evidence for it has ever been found.

Jiraskars are fierce, apex predator reptiles. Their colorful bodies have fleshy frills and only two functioning limbs: powerful legs that carry them at prey with great speed. They have terrible (practically nonexistent) natural senses but can use their brains to tap into the datasphere, which guides them to where they need to go. The huge beasts live only to hunt because most of their prey is small, so they must kill continually to survive.

When the earthshaker appears, shouldering aside obstructions without the least effort, it’s like thunder given flesh and allowed to run free. A fully grown earthshaker matriarch can reach heights of about 50 feet (15 m). A sharp smell like during a lightning storm, flickering illumination, and a low-pitched grunting heralds the arrival of a pack of babirasa. About 5 ft. tall at the shoulder, these many-legged predators have flesh the color of coal, studded with metallic spines that spark with static. Their long heads contain tusks and many teeth for tearing. Without eyes, babirasa sense their prey and environment with an electric sense that might just actually work better than normal sight. They use that same power source to stun, kill, and perhaps even cook their prey. When they wish to go about quietly, they produce a constant static discharge whose sounds acts to audibly camouflage them.
