Design Brief

3D Printing Industry is back again with their 4th annual 3D Printing Industry Awards for 2020. Once again the design competition for the 3D Printing Industry Awards trophy is in partnership with Protolabs.

    The winning design will have access to the full capabilities of Protolabs, state of the art, additive manufacturing services.

    With this in mind, we want you to design a trophy that will celebrate the unique capabilities of 3D printing.

    Features and considerations to include in your design:

  • Lattice Structure
  • Must be designed to be made in two different materials, one part SLA and one part MJF or SLS
  • Use of internal channels
  • Incorporate multiple features that are minimum 0.15-0.20mm in size (preferably in the same orientation) for SLA parts.
  • Minimum feature size for MJF or SLS parts is 0.75 mm
  • Min/Max trophy size: 75x75x75mm/125x125x125mm
  • Optimised for SLA and MJF or SLS

    • Top Tip:

    Protolabs can print in translucent/clear material, so think about how you can play with aesthetics, by adding internal cavities and features that will be visible from the outside. Make sure to add a render to your submission to demonstrate your design's internal features.

    The winner will receive a Craftbot Flow IDEX XL

    In addition, the winning designer will be catapulted to 3D printing stardom, and immortalised through their winning trophy design for the official 3D Printing Industry Awards, in partnership with Protolabs.

      The theme of this 3D design challenge is designing a trophy for the 3D Printing Industry Awards, taking place in November 2020, that truly embodies the possibilities of 3D printing, and Protolabs' state of the art manufacturing capabilities.

    The first prize is the highly impressive, large-format Craftbot Flow IDEX XL. This FDM 3D printer features independent extruders so you can print dual-color objects or even print two objects simultaneously using parallel or mirror mode.

    This CraftBot 3D printer is designed for professional users with features including mesh bed leveling, BL touch, a purpose-built printing bed, web interface, IoT and it has a huge build volume - making it probably the largest plug & play IDEX printer in the world

    So you want to win a design competition?
    Here are some top tips to help you climb up the leader-board:

    1. Think about your design(s) in relation to the brief and how best you might best optimise it for 3D printing.

    2. Make sure you read all the design constraints and download all designer resources so as to ensure you are on the right track.
