Plain or sculpted columns carved from a single block supported facades in the Puuc region (Mexico), forming porticoes that allowed light to enter structures. Several anthropomorphic examples bearing figures with bulging eyes come from this site, near Sayil; their obese bodies are covered with hard scales, similar to armadillo scales, which suggest a type of armor.
