Description
This capital depicts the four rivers of Paradise: Phison, Gihon, Tigris and Euphrates, identified by inscriptions. They are represented in the way of the ancient tradition of river gods pouring water. This capital may appear to stand alone in this cycle. Its presence may be explained, however, as the rivers of Paradise also symbolised the four evangelists. They evoked the scattering of the apostles and their mission to evangelise the people of earth.
