This cigarette case was 3D scanned with a Go!Scan 50 at the Mariners’ Museum on July 10, 2018. Accession number 2014.0015. Courtesy of the Mariners’ Museum, Newport News, Virginia. From the catalogue description: constructed of two lacquered papier-mâché panels connected with an accordion-like fabric lining. The case features an image of a young Queen Victoria on one side and an overpainted engraving depicting a sailor branding a female slave on the other. The portrait of Queen Victoria shows her facing left with an ermine cape with red sleeves, a brown bodice and green sash around her waist. Her hair is parted at the centre and falls in ringlets at either side of her face. The image on the reverse depicts a sailor in a red and white striped shirt, pale coloured pants, a blue sash around his waist and a red cap branding a slave on the right shoulder. A young sailor holding a lantern stands to the right, with his shirt tied around his waist. He is wearing green pants. A whip lays on the ground behind him.
