Torso of Dionysos, from greek copy, 4 century B.C., Italy (?). 3D scan made at Musee du Cinquantenaire (Brussels, Belgium) with Memento Beta.
This young man wears plait typically from gods Appolo and Dionysos. This is a sculpture of Dionysos, resting, represented with the type "Bale-Woburn". This might be a sculpture from Praxitele or Leochares. Dionysus (Dionysos) is the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy in Greek mythology. Alcohol, especially wine, played an important role in Greek culture with Dionysus being an important reason for this life style. Also known as Bacchus, the name adopted by the Romans.
