After the death of his father Septimus Severus, Caracalla assasinated his brother Publius Septimius Geta and reigned alone. This is a popular style of portrait that Caracalla commissioned for himself. For the first time in official portraiture was emotion reflected in Roman sculpture, of aggressiveness; look at the anger expressed in the roughness around the brows and raised corners of the lips. This head has multiple reproductions of the same time period.
