A 3D printable robust ESC standoff to securely mount an ESC onto a mid-size profile model aircraft constructed from foamboard, cardboard and/or balsa, with a wingspan of approximately 1 to 1.5 meters (~39 to 60 inches). The standoff has channels or passthroughs to thread small nylon tie wraps, which are used to secure the ESC in place, and when needed, allows for easy removal as well.
It can be easily 3D printed, without any support, on a modern inexpensive 3D Printer, with a variety of high temperature materials, including PETG and ABS.
PLA should be avoided for this application, because the part may be exposed to a high temperature exceeding ~55 C (~ 130 F). At such temperature, PLA will likely deform and warp. Therefore, I strongly recommend using PETG or ABS instead, to print parts.
I have successfully used this standoff since early 2019 on my profile aircrafts. It works well without any issues.
Recommended print settings with a .4 mm nozzle
- Layer Hight: .150 ~.160 mm, depending on motors and gearing
- 2 perimeters or shells (~0.9 mm)
- 6 bottom layers (~0.9 mm)
- 6 top layers (~0.9 mm)
- Infill 15%~20%, depending on infill type
Assembly Instructions
I recommend using medium CA, with or without accelerator, to glue the part to the model. However, feel free to use any other suitable adhesives you are comfortable with.
Apply CA glue to the 6 pads on the bottom of the standoff and mount in a suitable location.
After the glue has cured, use any of the 5 channels to thread small nylon tie wraps to secure the ESC on top of the standoff.
I find that 3 tie wraps work best for me; i.e.: one on each end, to secure the ESC wires, and one in the center to secure the ESC itself.
Note: The large flat cooling plate on the ESC must be on top of the assembly.
