Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) was a Norwegian researcher, politician and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Nansen played a key role in Norway’s efforts to achieve political independence as one of the country’s most respected citizens. During the last decade of his life, Nansen served as a delegate and High Commissioner for Refugees to the League of Nations, which was founded after the First World War. It was during this period that he initiated the Nansen Pass for stateless refugees, named after him. For this and for his services to international refugee aid he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922.
