Lord Kinnaird (1780-1829), builder of the family seat at Rossie Priory in Perthshire, spent much time abroad adding to his father's art collection. The patronage of the Kinnairds and of several other prominent aristocrats from central Scotland was crucial to the development of Thomas Campbell's early career. Edinburgh-born by resident in Rome from 1819 to 1830, he attracted many portrait commissions from wealthy fellow-Scots on the Grand Tour of Italy.
