Clement XIV, Pope from 1769 to 1774, is best remembered for planning the Museo Pio Clementino at the Vatican. This showcased much of the antique sculpture excavated by the influential English dealer and antiquary Thomas Jenkins and the Scottish neoclassical painter and dealer Gavin Hamilton. Both assisted Hewetson's career. With its virtuoso carving, this impressive bust played a key role in establishing Hewetson as the leading portrait sculptor in Rome during the 1770s.
