Description
Nydia, The Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii is an impressive marble sculpture inspired by Edward Bulwer-Lytton's novel, The Last Days of Pompeii. Sculpted by Randolph Rogers in 1854 the llife-size piece depicts Nydia, one of the characters in the novel. She was a yhoung slave girl stolen from high-born parents by kidnappers, weaving and selling garlands of flowers to earn money. She eventually commits suicide rather than suffer unrequited love. The sculpture can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
