Penji (Funerary Steles) in Quai Branly, Paris

The slaves, jewelry and horses engraved and sculptued on these Penji (funerary steles) are signs of riches and wealth. Having these on a funerary monument were supposed to ensure a high social position in the afterlife. All of these stone steles originate from Indonesia, the south west of Sumba and are believed to havebeen created in the 19th and 20th Centuries.
This object is part of "Scan The World".
