Description
This portrait depicts Livia, wife of Augustus, with a veiled head and shown in the guise of a young bride. This type of elevated depiction of rulers and people of power was commonplace in this era. The collected hairstyle, with a tuft folded like a roll on the forehead (now lost), was called the "all'Ottavia" and was characteristic of Roman matrons, in particular the women of the Giulio-Claudian Family.
Originating from via Marsilio in Padova.
