Description
The religious houses accumulated vast fortunes by leasing out their lands for domestic, retail and industrial use. Some of this wealth was spent on lavish refurbishments to the religious buildings and improved accommodation for the monks and nuns. The Priory and Hospital of St Mary Spital offered patients free board and lodging so long as they agreed to bequeath their goods to the Priory when they died
