Sculpture of an Hermaphrodite

This sculpture, made in the Atlantic Zone of Costa Rica, shows a person with hermaphroditic features. These representations were very important within the artistic expressions of the pre-Columbian cultures, whose dual symbolism (masculine-feminine) is associated with fertility, of which the indigenous elites were carriers and reproducers. The fact that a human or mythical being with these characteristics has been embodied in stone, indicates that its different nature gave it an important position within society.
