The animal sculptor, Ted Roocroft, had been shortlisted in the Sculpture for Peace competition organised by Manchester City Council in 1985. His sculpture of sheep had been admired and following the commissioning of Barbara Pearson's winning sculpture, it was decided to also commission two other entries: Michael Lyons's "Doves of Peace" and Roocroft's "Sheep". Roocroft's sculpture was considered as particularly suited to be sited on the landscaped area in front of the recently reconstructed Roman wall at Castlefield. It was installed there in 1986. The low pedestal meant that the sculpture was easily accessible to the public, and, as the sculptor anticipated, there was some damage. He had modelled the bodies on a vandal-proof frame reinforced with scrap metal. However, Roocroft did make a point of visiting and repairing the sculpture. Since his death those repairs have not continued with the result that both the sheep and the pedestal are in need of restoration.
