Even before I heard about the Sindoh Smart Assistant Design Challenge, I had had a problem - and an idea to go with it. I love playing music in the car, but oftentimes, I like to change my playlist, or listen to a specific song at a given moment while I’m driving. Because of this, I would make the unwise decision to use my phone to change the song while driving, putting my eyes on my phone, and not on the road.
I tried to get Siri to change my music for me, however, it seems that she doesn’t play very well with Spotify. Therefore, I began my search for an alternative! As an aspiring engineer, a new owner of a 3D printer, and having a few CAD tricks up my sleeve, I began to work on a solution. I had always thought that Amazon’s Alexa was a cool way to listen to music, so I thought, why not?
I designed a *very simple* magnetic car mount for Alexa. I’ve been using it for almost the entire month of February 2019 now, and I haven’t had any problems with the design. Now, I can listen to whatever I want, whenever I want - and safely! And the best part is, you can too!
The Alexa Magnetic Car Mount uses your phone’s hotspot and a 3 amp car charger to power up and get connected to the internet. Link to the car charger I use here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GP4KBKF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I like this one especially because it has two usb ports, so I can charge my phone at the same time.
The magnet hole is for one of these DIYMAG neodymium disc magnets found here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XD2X45M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
- Light infill, I believe I used 20%. Any higher shouldn't be necessary.
- Use supports for the hole and the cutout for the magnet on the bottom.
-No bed adhesion required.
-I used white AmazonBasics PLA, but any hard plastic should work fine.
