Torso of Doryphoros by Polykleitos of Argos
Published 2018-02-27T12:56:19+00:00
Rome (Italy), Palatine Hill, formerly Collection Pourtalès
Marble, Roman, after an original from around 450/440 BC
In his posture, Polykleitos' Spear-Bearer reflects the experimental examination of the shifted balance of weight in the depiction of the human body. This is an ideal portrayal of an athletic man capable of bearing arms and who will give his body and life in protecting the freedom of his city.
