Design Brief

We have all had a moment when we needed a replacement part for a domestic appliance. Many times, a lost dishwasher wheel or a displaced oven knob can become a nightmare to replace, and the appliance will end up thrown away and replaced by a new product, leading to waste and higher expenses.

This doesn’t have to be the case! While spare parts are difficult to find and expensive, not to mention it can take months to get them delivered, 3D printing offers a simple solution to this problem, and we need you, designers, to show us how to get it done!

With this challenge, we want you to design, print and upload 3D spare parts designs in order to help people who need them, and don’t have the skills to design their own parts.

Why replace it? Just fix it!

You can upload as many designs as you want, just make sure the parts you design are adapted to 3D printing, that the parts are working on your appliances and that they are not already on MyMiniFactory. We have some incredible prizes for you depending on the number of submissions:

1-50 submissions: 1x $250

51-100 submissions: 2x $250

101-150 submissions: 3x $250

and so on...

Once you have uploaded your part, make sure to include two pictures: one of the object on a plain background and one of the object in the appliance. We also need the brand and model number to know which device it belongs to!

Good luck!

Prizes

Main prize

This competition's prize will depend on the number of submissions.

If less than 50 people participate, there will be 1x $250 for the winner, and for every extra 50 submissions we are adding in another $250 for you to win! Winners will be chosen at random, so increase your chances to win and upload more than one design! Just remember, the spare part must be functional, and it cannot be something that currently exists on the MyMiniFactory platform.

Top Tips

So you want to win a design competition?
Here are some top tips to help you save time:

1. Be precise when measuring and designing your part and take a margin when a part needs to fit somewhere

2. Don’t hesitate to remove unnecessary features and make it as easily printable as possible

3. Reinforce parts that are susceptible to break

4. To find the model number, look for a label similar to this one:

You can find help on the internet to locate it. Write the Model number, not the serial number.

5. To check that the part is not already on MyMiniFactory, look for the brand and the model number of your appliance. If nothing comes up, you are good to go.

6. Once your design is approved, post it on social media with: #3DSpareParts @MyMiniFactory

  • Read and understand the design brief.
  • Thinkabout how you can best deliver a solution.
