Description
The god of wine was one of the most popular subjects for decorating outdoor areas where Renaissance works competed with ancient sculpture.. Carried out for the garden of the Villa of Giovanni Bartolini in Gualfonda, this Bacchus was immediately recognised as a masterpiece of grace and elegance, becoming a model for young sculptors. In 1544 Gherardo Bartolini, brother and heir of the patron, donated the statue to Cosimo I de' Medici, who installed it in the ducal apartments of Palazzo Vecchio. The statue was moved again in the 17th century and it got badly damaged in a fire in 1762 (traces of which are still visible).
