Description
The design was first modelled in 1810 and a number of marble versions were executed. The present version is probably the one made for the Maequess of Lansdowne in 1810. According to Thorvaldsen's account books furthre versions were being executed in the 1820s and 30s, one of which is over the almsbox in the Church of Our Lady, Copenhagen. The work exemplifies Thorvaldsen's neo-classicism - simple in outline, tightly composed, with clear draperies and illustrating a Christian virtue.
