This set of files is the complete set of casting patterns required to make a Dave Gingery Metal Lathe. This project requires considerable time and effort and will take you through the basics of machining and metal casting, including the construction of a metal foundry that uses either charcoal or propane. These patterns are an accompaniment to David Gingery's book "Build Your Own Metal Working Shop From Scrap" (ISBN:978-1-878087-35-5) and his drawings have been reproduced as faithfully as possible (with minor adjustments) into the 3D objects here. Note that these are simply patterns for casting and it is impossible to complete the project without the instructions from the book which may be purchased online through various book purveyors. However, without metal casting and appropriate structural rigidity, it may still be possible to construct a functional lathe from the 3D printed patterns with the appropriate modifications, although the lathe will be limited in its ability to cut certain materials. Additionally, because the parts are so large, certain pieces such as the bed, will require processing in Meshmixer or similar software to be able to fit the print beds of most 3D printers. The pieces can then be stir welded for casting. Finally, although these are designed to be used with the traditional cope and drag method, it would be easier to use the lost PLA method of casting, but will require that you add your own sprues, runners and vent holes, for which foam and wire glued to the pattern is recommended.
For Lost PLA casting, utilize a low infill approximately 10% or less to reduce wasted material and reduce burnout time.
