Dragon Egg Puzzle V2
Dragon Egg Puzzle V2

This is based off of my supportless sphere puzzle V2. The original dragon egg puzzle could be printed supportless, however, some of the spikes that were more horizontal were difficult to print. This version is much more print friendly with all 45 deg or higher angles. It also contains one more side piece for a more fun assembly.
The clearance gaps are a little over 0.1 mm. The pieces I printed fit like a glove when I put them together. This model should able to be upscaled, but clearance gaps will become less exacting the bigger they get, tending towards looser. The example in the pictures was printed at 0.2 mm line height. Also printed this with a higher wall line count to give it solid spikes. It was printed using a heat based color changing filament, which made for some fun pictures.
Not only do multiple pieces print easier, but a bonus is if a spike breaks off it is easy to reprint one instead of the entire thing if it was a single object. Experienced this when I put the last two pieces together. In my excitement I ran upstairs to show it to my wife and it slipped out of my hands and broke two of the pieces when it hit my tile floor. Sadly, I had not taken pictures yet. But while i was waiting for replacement parts to print I realized that I could mix and match pieces from my Supportless Sphere Puzzle V2 it was based off. Got some cool picture out of that and some ideas for future projects.
Printed at 0.2 mm line height. For solid spikes, I printed this with a higher wall line count, I did 6 wall lines. Might be overkill, but also did not require much more material or time either. With more wall line count you can do less infill density as a consequence. So it kind of offsets it.
