Hello, I'm a 16 year old boy and I love designing all sorts of things. Recently I've been wanting to become a biomedical engineer who designs prosthetics. This was the perfect opportunity to get me going on my journey.
Throughout my design process I decided I was going for flexible fingers with a superficially rigid palm and fourarm. Then came the designing. I believe getting the angles on the fingers was the hardest part. The fact that I had to angle them to function at a certain point was trickey. I went through multiple designs until I got it as close as I could.
Then came the palm. Since the design came from the measurements I took on my hand I knew one of the harder designs was going to involve my hand. Until I remembered a video I watched where photogrammetry was used to scan a house. I then scanned my hand then hollowed it out, made it lower poly, then in a different software I added finger holes.
Then came the saddest part. Electronics. I was not able to attain the electronics needed to make the arm/hand portable (how I wanted). I really wanted to do so many things with it. Nevertheless, I came up with a simple solution using k'nex and my dad's electric drill. By making a stand for the hand out of k'nex, I made an axle and then connected the filament inside the fingers to a servo like grip. Then I connnected the drill and tightened it up. It worked, so that made me happy.
A few things I forgot to mention:
Coolio :)
