An RC Aircraft Wheel Stand designed to hold an airplane wheel axel 60mm (~2 3/8”) off the ground while in storage or during transport, to prevent flat spots on the tires. This version is suitable for wheels up to 90mm (~3 ½”), with an axel diameter of up to 5mm (~ 13/16”).
The parts can be easily 3D printed without any support, on a modern inexpensive 3D Printer. They can be printed with a variety of materials, including PLA, PETG, ABS and many other types of printable materials.
PLA works very well for this application. It is easy to print. The object should be durable, easy to maintain, and last for a long time.
However, it should not be stored or kept at high temperature, exceeding ~55 C (~ 130 F).
Should the object be left in a high temperature environment, such as a parked car in the summer, I strongly recommend using another heat tolerant material, such as PETG or ABS to prevent warping.
Recommended print settings with a .4 mm nozzle
- Layer Hight: .150 ~.160 mm, depending on motors and gearing
- 3 perimeters or shells (1.2 ~ 1.5 mm)
- 8 bottom layers (1.2 ~ 1.3 mm)
- 8 top layers (1.2 ~ 1.3 mm)
- Infill ~20%, depending on infill type.
Additional items needed for assembly
- 4 x Button head screws M3x12 (or M3x10).
Assembly Instructions
For convenience the base features holes that are smooth on one side and have M3 threads on the other.
1- Print 2 set of parts for each aircraft.
2- Place and align a stand leg in the slot on one of the base. Ensure that the stand leg screw holes align with the mounting holes in the base.
3- Determine which side of the base mounting holes are smooth and which have M3 threads.
4- Insert button head screw M3x12 (or M3x10) through the smooth holes in the base to secure the stand leg in place. Apply just enough torque to secure the parts together - DO NOT OVERTIGHTENT!
5- Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 to assemble the other stand.
Note: Button head screws work best for this application. However, you may use a different type screw head that would fit and function such as:
- Pan head
- Socket head
- Round head
- etc., etc...
