Description
Culture: Olmec Material: Green Serpentine or jade Dims: H 34cm W 13cm Accession No: L 003 Current Location: The Hunt Museum, Limerick. Sculpture of a male figure with the arms and head mutilated. This figure shows features of Olmec carvings, downturned mouth, prominent flared lip, bent legs, flat nose, almond eyes and cleft head. Portable objects were made of imported jade and local greenstone. Early evidence of Olmec civilisation dates to 1,200 BC. They lived along the Mexican Gulf Coast, in the Veracruz and Tabasco states. The term Olmec is an Aztec word for the region Olman meaning ‘place of rubber’. More.
