Alan Bridgwater was born in Sparkbrook, Birmingham in 1903. He won a scholarship to study at Birmingham School of Art and studied there from 1923-33. At this time Bridgwater also worked in the studio of William Bloye, a Birmingham based sculptor.
'Spring' depicts a female nude to the waist. The style suggests an influence from Cubism and new modes of representation by artists such as Georges Braque, whose work can also be seen on display at the Institute.
