Island of Naxos (Greece), acquired in 1903
Marble from Naxos, 550 - 540 BC
Due to the local high-quality marble, the Naxians were decisively involved in the development of the kouros type. This prototype of the archaic image of men was created under Egyptian influence. Nude bodies are usually depicted frontally. As tomb statues, they personify the aristocratic ideal of athletic and intellectual perfection.
