Description
William Rathbone (1819-1902) was an honorary freeman of the city of Liverpool. He was a member of parliament for Liverpool from 1869 to 1880, a guardian of the poor in Liverpool for thirty-five years, and a founder of the University of Liverpool and of the Univeristy of Wales. He also instituted the training school for nurses and brought trained nurses into the homes of the poor and suffering, first in Liverpool and later thoughout the country.
The sculpture was erected by the citizens of Liverpool
