Description
Created by Alexander Handyside Ritchie was born in Musselburgh, the son of a brickmaker and ornamental plasterer. He attended art, architecture and anatomy classes at Edinburgh School of Arts, and then in Rome from 1826-1839. In 1842 he opened a studio at 92 Princes Street from where he executed portrait busts such as this one of the architects of the Scott Monument, George Meikle Kemp. Other examples of his work in Edinburgh can be seen in the Central Library, the Royal College of Physicians on Queen Street, and The Commercial bank on George Street.
