Descripción
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse's statue depicts the Bacchantes, women who worshiped the Roman God Bacchus, God of wine and revelry. The most important part of his retinue, these women wore Bassarisk or fox skin. In art, they are often depicted in a state of ecstasy and intoxication, a state of religious fervour encouraged by the God himself.
Carrier-Belleuse was eager to portray the nude in the most sensual way possible, and this was why he turned to antiquity, using it as an excuse to study the nude form.
The statue currently stands in the Musee D'orsay in Paris, France
