Control Horn – 50mm (~ 2 inches)
$0.70 Control Horn – 50mm (~ 2 inches)

A 3D printable control horn for a mid-size model aircraft constructed from foamboard, cardboard and/or balsa, with a wingspan of approximately 1 to 1.5 meters (~39 to 60 inches).
The control horn has a 50mm (~2 inches) mounting base to provide positive control authority with minimum flex and/or flutter of the control surfaces. It works well with many RC aircrafts for 3D aerobatics.
It can be easily 3D printed, without any support, on a modern inexpensive 3D Printer with a variety of materials, including PLA, PETG, ABS and many other types of printable materials.
PLA works well for this application, unless the model aircraft will be kept or stored in a high temperature environment such as a parked car in the summer, where the temperature may exceed ~55 C (~ 130 F). At such temperature, PLA will likely deform and warp. Therefore, I strongly recommend using PETG or ABS instead, to print part.
I have successfully used this horn since early 2018. It is a good upgrade for many foamboard kits.
Recommended print settings with a .4 mm nozzle:
- Layer Hight: .150 ~.160 mm, depending on motors and gearing
- 2 perimeters or shells (~0.9 mm)
- 6 bottom layers (~0.9 mm)
- 6 top layers (~0.9 mm)
- Infill 15%~20%, depending on infill type
Assembly Instructions
I recommend using medium CA, with or without accelerator, to glue the individual parts to the model. However, feel free to use any other suitable adhesives you are comfortable with.
The holes in the control horn may be slightly undersized for your pushrods and/or clevis. For a precise fit, ream/drill them out to the correct size for your hardware.
