Cyzikus (Turkey), gift of Theodor Wiegand 1932
Marble, around 500 BC
The head with slightly slanted eyes, a smiling mouth and long hair combed over the high back of the head belongs to an Eastern Greek statue of a girl (kore). But there is no jewellery, which alongside precious garments and a contained smile generally characterised the aristocracy's image of women in the 6th century BC.
