Given the chance to make my own mask design, with a 4 day deadline I started out creating a hard surface model in zbrush; playing around with some different brushes until it started to look how I wanted. From this initial design play I then sketched out the design onto paper to finalise the details, returning to zbrush to add them, using my drawings as reference.
Once happy with the 3D model in Zbrush I imported it to 3D studio max to clean up the surface by retopologysing it, before reimporting it to zbrush to be decimated into a single, water tight mesh.
From zbrush the design was then exported in STL format; where it could then be taken into Rhino 3D software to be divided into printable pieces, able to fit on a standard desktop 3D printer.
Overall i'd say the main design inspirations behind the look of the mask are -
Skulls, gorilla forms, robotics, aliens and bio mechanics.
Catherine Wood from the post procesing department (you can check out some of their tutorial videos here) constructed the final wearable helmet, and did an awesome airbrush paint job too! In the how-to section below you can find out more about the techniques she used for doing this.
Painted by Catherine Wood The mask was assembled with superglue and epoxy resin. It was then sanded and filled with p38 car body filler until the model was smooth and ready for painting. Next it was primed in acrylic primer, then hand painted with acrylics and an airbrush. The skull was airbrushed on in white grey and blue. The helmet was then sealed in a matt varnish and lined with foam for comfort. the are 10 parts that have to be printed
