'Nello della Pietra e Pia dei Tolomei', by Alfonso Balzico in 1868, is a figurative sculpture depicting Pia dei Tolomei and her husband Nello, two figures in Gaetano Donizetti's tragic opera 'Pia de' Tolomei', a narrative originally mentioned by Dante in his Divine Comedy (Part 2, Purgatorio).
The marble sculpture depicts Pia dei Tolomei at the feet of her husband who snatches the wedding ring from her finger. The synopsis surrounds the act of revenge when a man (Ghino), who has fallen in love with Pia, refuses his advances and falsy accuses her of commiting adultry. This leads to Nello ordering for Pia's death before realising that he was lied to, though Pia is already deceased.
