This sculpture portraiys Pan, the Greek god of woods, fields, flocks and herds. He is shown bearing his famous reed pipes, used for playing music to charm the nymphs. In Wolff's sculpture Pan holds a wine jug and a cup, a passing reference to Bacchus the Greek god of Wine, who pan is sometimes shown accompanying.
Born in Berlin, Wolff moved to Italy, where he served as the director of the St. Luke Academy in Rome.
