Culture: Medieval Material: Salt-glazed stoneware Dims: H 24cm W 13cm D 10cm Accession No: MG 077 Current Location: The Hunt Museum, Limerick. A single-handled jug with silver mounts on the lid, collar, handle and foot. Decorated with a leaf and strapwork neck frieze with cherubs heads in a circle at each end. In the middle there is a heart and mask. The upper slopes of the body are decorated with a criss-cross geometric design and the lower part of the body is decorated with gadrooning. The later mounts are decorated with a floral motif. The thumb plate has a mark, R.B.E. Siegburg stoneware is handmade with a distinctive grey-white glaze. Decoration is pressed on meaning large volumes can be made quickly. These jugs spread afar through the development of trading posts by the Hanseatic League. More.
