Description
Carved by Jan van Schayck (active about 1494-1520); painted by Ernst van Schayck and Dirck Scay
These roundels decorated the ceiling of the library in Utrecht Cathedral. They show the symbols of the four evangelists, who wrote the Gospels about Christ's life, while other bosses included four showing the Fathers of the Church. These images were ideal for reminding the readers below of the Gospels and the achievements of the great scholars of the early church.
