Description
This relief is a component of a scene of the Annunciation to the Shepherds.
The Annunciation to the Sherpherds takes place the same night as Jesus's birth and is part of the Nativity: an angel announced the birth of the Christ to shephards – "Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.".
The sheep and oxen also have quite an importance in Christian iconogrpahy. The sheep evoke the lamb, which is often used to represent Jesus, and the oxen, also present in the stable during Nativity, is the epitome of toil and sacrifice.
