Adam, after his disobedience, haunted by his sin and his culpability. In order to suggest the irreparable commited in the Garden of Eden, the artist inspired himself with Michelangelos artworks. The huddled position as well as the muscular nudity of the character reminds the athletic Ignudi represented on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Afflicted, Adam is falling into melancholy. The massive rock represents the weight of his remorse.
