Description
The short tunic and sandals indicate that this is Artemis (Diana), goddess of the hunt. Artemis is fastening her cloak over her right shoulder: a gesture rarely represented. This was long thought to be an indication that this was a copy of the Artemis Brauronia, a marble statue made by Praxiteles about 330 BC for the Acropolis in Athens. In fact, the Gabii statue could be a copy of a later work, from the Hellenistic or Roman era, done in the style of Praxiteles.
