Brain Cabinet
Brain Cabinet

A small, brain-shaped cabinet with four drawers. (one is in the eyeball) Ideal gift for a neuroscientist or for people with a fetish for brains. I went for a two tone look with wood filament in a darker and lighter shade. (check out 'Printing Details' below for more!)
This project was inspired by the "Band Saw Box 'laminated'" by Franc Falco.
Contours of the brain and sulci are based on this illustration by artist and medical illustrator Patrick J. Lynch, which is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License 2006. I did take some liberties with the brain anatomy in favour of more sensible drawer anatomy (in particular with the separation between bottom and middle drawer).
The files
- BrainCabinet.stl - the frame of the cabinet; will require a small piece of support material. Printed with a 0.6 mm nozzle and 0.35 mm layer height for relatively fast printing. (still took almost 10 hours) Filament changes at 12 and 88 mm (exact values depend on your slicer) for edges in contrasting color.
- BrainCabinetDrawers.stl - the 4 drawers; complete, but probably not easily printable this way; I suggest to print the next two files instead and glueing the pieces together afterwards.
- BrainCabinetDrawers_topless.stl - drawers, missing one side (the top, in the given orientation); should be easily printable this way.
- BrainCabinetDrawers_toponly.stl - side panel (with handles) of the drawers; print those separately and glue them to the previous parts (..._topless).
Dual color print
As you can see in the pictures, I printed this with two different kinds of wood filament (FormFutura EasyWood pine and coconut), changing the filament at certain layers: 12 mm from each side (dark borders on frame, pale borders on drawers) and for the handle on the drawers. I also added in two layers of the darker filament for each side of each drawer to make the imprinted pattern more visible. As an additional side effect, this creates a thin, dark outline around each drawer panel.
Despite the two-colored prints, this was done with a single-extruder, single-material printer, just by switching out the filament manually at certain layers. Of course, this isn't mandatory, and you could just as well choose to use only a single color.
Tolerances
Tolerances for the drawers are a bit tight. Everthing fits (or it did with my own print), but there is some friction when the drawers are opened or closed. If you want to ensure a looser fit with less friction, you could try to scale down the drawers in x- and y-direction a tiny bit (maybe ~0.5%) - I haven't tried this, though, and am quite happy with the tighter fit.
