Marble, around 410 BC
This funerary relief from the final phase of the Peloponnesian War depicts two citizen soldiers from Athens, armed with the large round shield, lance and cone-shaped pilos helmet. The bearded man to the left wearing the robes of an Athenian priest is possibly a seer, their consultation being obligatory prior to any battle.
