The statue portrays Jupiter with the aegis, a goatskin shield with the head of a Gorgon at the centre. Zeus, who was thus called Aegiochus (Holder of the Aegis), used it when fighting. Aterwards, a dedication to Jupiter Optimus Maximus was carved on the plinth by the senator Neratius Palmatus, perhaps in his house -loci dominus conditorque.
