This marble bust, incised and dated 1848 was sculpted by Thomas Campbell (1790-1858). The sculpture depicts Lord George Cavendish Bentinck (1802-48). Bentick was a statesman and sportsman. He was also an English Conservative politician and racehorse owner, noted for his role (with Benjamin Disraeli) in unseating Sir Robert Peel over the Corn Laws. He is not to be confused with his contemporary George Bentinck MP.
