This marble lion was probably part of a funerary monument.
Other examples have been found in funerary monuments of notable men or on monuments of soldiers fallen in battle.
Indeed, the lion is one of the most recurring figures in art history: it has long been the symbol of power, strength, fierceness and manliness.
