MK2 Surround Nozzle
MK2 Surround Nozzle
Published 2017-10-09T11:51:24+00:00
This was to be a stopgap before upgrading to MK2.5 as stock nozzle tab shattered due to heat warp crash. It is similar to MK3 nozzle design but with an offset half circle due to PINDA clearance.
Version 4 48 hrs torture test post-mortem:
- side-up print side effect is vent droop, odd as center droop is worst but has most airflow
- overall body has no droop issues vs. perior versions
- rear cooling is no better than stock unfortunately
Latest Version 4 Highlights:
- Baffle chamber columns help side-up print orientation.
- Nozzle bottom requires no cleaning.
- More unnecessary material removed.
- Mount hole tabs flushed more.
- Reinforcement break-away supports mitigate early crashing.
- More messy intake print but acceptable.
- Unavoidable cleanup moved to less visible side also much easier to clean.
- Still requires brim and plate-supports but much less.
Original Design directive:
- Easy swap design for Volcano down the line.
- Reinforced right mounting tab for extruder-cover.
- Truncated nozzle skirt area from extruder-cover part.
- Roughly match MK3 nozzle design.
- Flow optimized with discreet intake ducting for central air bias with surrounding assist airflow based on forum member provided.
- Requires two 25mm M3 socket screw with washers.
Other Notes:
- Truncated "extruder-cover" part is directly from Prusa Research and modded but it was found that right side wire guide tab was slightly shorter on my MK2S (latest generation). As it doesn't impact performance and my MK2S may be unique, it was left short.
- Offending weak mount tab also reinforced. Also, part was printed solid as Cura has trouble with internal filaments.
- Nozzle will go through a little heat droop on first print so some sanding my be needed to re-flush but seems to settle after a couple prints.
Benchy test in ABS:
Benchy photo is in ABS at 0.1mm using version 3 without sock.
Fan 40%, 240°C / 100°C, 40mm/s
It was noticed that Matterhacker's standard ABS was inferior to Prusa Research EasyABS so pimples and dimples are on Matterhacker material not the printer or nozzle.
