Smartphone mount for tripod
Smartphone mount for tripod

The lack of a tripod mount kept me from using my phone's camera to its full potential. So I made one...
I wanted to keep it compact and I also wanted it to use a compliant mechanism. After several failures with more elaborate mechanisms, I settled on a very simple design, with a deformable ring. Press its sides and the clamps holding the phone will move to open.
I included 3 different sizes, for smartphones of different width:
- S: for phones up to about 68 mm width
- M: for phones up to about 70 mm width
- L: for phones up to about 73 mm width
Those sizes are merely estimates, as I couldn't really test it with different phones.
The square bottom part of the phone holder should be stuck into the octagon-shaped mount with the tripod thread. It should be a tight fit. I included the part with three different tolerances (0.1/0.15/0.2 mm) for you to achieve that perfect fit. Maybe start with the middle one (...tol015) and see whether it is too loose or too tight.
The tripod thread is already incorporated into the part. The first time screwing it on a tripod may need some force, but it goes in very well after some use.
The phone holder should be printed with the ring lying down. It will need some support structures. The mount part should be printed standing up, with the screw thread in a vertical orientation.
I used PETG in my prints so far. But I expect PLA to work, too.
