Calling all Engineers, Problem-Solvers

We're super excited to introducing an all new 3D design challenge with Dyson!

Dyson is a British technology company that designs and manufactures vacuum cleaners, hand dryers, bladeless fans, heaters and hair dryers. It sells machines in over 70 countries and employs more than 7,000 people worldwide.

Dyson have now come to you, the MyMiniFactory community, and they want you to show them what you've got!

For this competition we want you to solve a problem using 3D printing. While that may sound broad, there are a couple of criteria to consider that will narrow this down and help you create something that will stand out:

  • Engineering focus. Think like an engineer, use your smarts to create something clever and effective.

  • Product Design. Use Dyson as inspiration, look at how their products look and feel and try incorporate that into your work.

  • Solve a problem. Make sure your design tackles a problem people face in today's world, this can be as broad or as niche as you like as long as it addresses a real issue.

  • Make use of 3D printing. This is key! Make sure your design exploits what is only possible with 3D printing. If your design could just as easily be carved out of wood it's not a good fit for this contest. Use the technology at your disposal!

  • Keep all of those things in mind and come up with something that will blow Dyson away. The grand prize for this competition is a Type A Machines Series 1 Pro worth $4,000. In addition to that, the top designs will make their way into the hands of some of the most influential people at Dyson, helping you put your design skills on the map.

    Good Luck!

    Top Tips

So you want to win a design competition?
Here are some top tips to help you climb up the leader board

    1. Think about your design(s) in relation to the brief and how best you might best optimise it for 3D printing.

    2. Make sure to clearly present the problem you are trying to solve, and explain how your design delivers a solution.

    3. If you are printing your own design, invest your time into taking, well lit, in focus photos with a plain or relavnt background. Check out the featured designs on the hompage for an idea of what we are looking for.

    4. Once your design is approved, post it on twitter with #DysonInventor @MyMiniFactory @Dyson.

    • Read and understand the design brief.
    • Thinkabout how you can best deliver a solution.
    • Use the tips and resources provided
    • Explain the concept behind your design.
    • Presentprint, and photograph your design with care.

Please note - you do not need to 3D print your entry yourself, submission of just the 3D printable model (in STL format) will suffice. We strongly recommend that you 3D print your own entry if you can, as this will allow you to showcase your piece as it was intended and improve your chances.
Designs that are submitted without photos of the final 3D print will be printed by the MyMiniFactory community - subject to printability and at a reduced scale if necessary. If you are unclear on any part of the competition, please email info@myminifactory.com for further support.
